Is Lobelia Regatta Blue a Perennial?

Regatta series lobelia, including "Regatta Blue" (Lobelia erinus "Regatta Blue") are tender perennials, hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Outside of those zones, the plants generally are grown as annuals, either raised from seeds or started from nursery cell packs. Lobelia plants usually have either an upright or a trailing growth habit. Regatta series plants such as "Regatta Blue" are the trailing type. Handle the plants with caution because milky sap from their cut stems may irritate skin.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDescription

Reaching only 6 to 9 inches tall, "Regatta Blue" lobelia is a low-grower and spreads up to 12 inches. Lobelia is known for its intense color, including the blues and blue-purples that characterize Regatta series members as well as other plants in the bellflower family. The flowers, which appear in profuse clusters beginning in mid- to late spring, are blue with two lips each. The segmented bottom lip, which can appear fan-shaped, is significantly larger than the top lip.

'Regatta Blue" seeds can be started indoors several weeks before the last frost date for a specific area, or the plants can be purchased at nurseries or garden centers. Lobelia thrives best in full sun to light shade in rich, well-drained soil. Deadhead the plant regularly as blooms fade to stimulate further growth. Some lobelia slow down or stop blooming during the hottest parts of summer, but varieties in the Regatta series are noted for heat tolerance. Regular fertilizing and watering during dry periods helps to encourage this trait. Sheer the plant back in midsummer to keep it full and producing flowers.

Low, trailing or spreading lobelia such as "Regatta Blue" should be positioned to show off their long stems. They are well-suited to mixed container plantings or window boxes, where their blue flowers can cascade over the container sides. "Regatta Blue" makes an effective rock garden subject when given enough room to spread. It also can be used as an edging plant, particularly in informal planting schemes, where its sprawling habit is in keeping with the garden's overall look. "Regatta Blue" also attracts butterflies, making it a choice for butterfly and other pollinator gardens.

The vibrant blue flowers of "Regatta Blue" harmonize well with the silvery gray leaves of "Powis Castle" wormwood (Artemisia "Powis Castle"), hardy in USDA zones 6 through 9. In hanging baskets or containers, lobelia can be paired with licorice plant (Helichrysum petiolare), which is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11 but often grown as an annual. Blue and yellow are opposite on the color wheel and have a natural affinity for each other. So "Regatta Blue" also shines in the company of yellow annuals such as marigolds (Tagetes spp. and varieties) and snapdragons (Antirrhinum spp. and varieties).
