Cogongrass hails from southeast Asia, the Philippines, Japan and China, where it thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. "Red Baron" is less heat tolerant, thriving in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 to 9. The plant is tolerant of partial shade, though it will produce its best growth and brightest color in a bright, sunny location. The bright red of spring leaves becomes brighter through the summer, eventually darkening to burgundy at the end of the season.

"Red Baron" is tolerant of a range of soil types, so long as soil is well draining. A humus-rich, fertile soil is ideal. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged or flooded. The plant can be cut down in the spring to make room for fresh new growth. Because the plant produces few to no flowers, self-sowing is rarely a problem. Unlike cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica ), the invasive species from which "Red Baron" is derived, "Red Baron" is quite slow growing.

The durable plant is tolerant of drought and air pollution, and is rarely bothered by deer. "Red Baron" can be grown near black walnut trees (Juglans nigra), which release a toxic substance called juglone that many common garden plants cannot grow near. It can be clustered together in a dense mass to create a colorful specimen or spread out to line a walkway. Its contrasting colors and love of well draining soil makes it a good choice for rock gardens.

Though "Red Baron" is slow to spread and is not considered invasive, it is capable of reverting to the species cogongrass if it self-sows. In this instance, leaves will turn entirely green, with no trace of red. If this occurs, the plant must be removed and destroyed immediately. Cogongrass is listed as a Federal Noxious Weed under the Plant Protection Act and is illegal to sell in the U.S. without a permit.
